Jacques Monory (born June 25, 1924 – died October 17, 2018) was a famous French artist. He was both a painter and a filmmaker. His artwork was greatly inspired by photography and movies.

Monory's paintings often showed his view of the modern world. He focused on the everyday challenges and realities of life. His art had a unique, serious mood. He was known for using his signature color, a special shade of blue, in many of his works.

Discovering Monory's Art

Jacques Monory's art has been shown in many places around the world. One of his exhibitions was in New York City at the Richard Taittinger Gallery. This show took place from January 12 to February 23, 2018.

The New York Times newspaper even wrote about it. They said his paintings could be compared to some American artists from the 1980s. However, Monory also admired older artists like Edward Hopper. For example, his painting "Spéciale n°54 Hommage à Hopper" (2007) shows a house with a sign for a "Hopper Center." This place only exists in his painting. Monory's art often felt like a movie screen where exciting stories unfolded.

How Monory Created His Art

Monory's first art show was in Paris in 1952. In the 1960s, he became a key artist in a European art style. This style was similar to American Pop Art, but it was called "Narrative Figuration" in France.

Monory explained that French Narrative Figuration was different from American Pop Art. He said, "What has developed in France has moved away from American Pop Art. We have expressed a critical narrative of society while the Americans have almost always, in my opinion, embraced their system. This is a fundamental difference." This means French artists like Monory used their art to comment on society.

Key Elements of His Work

In 1968, Monory made an important film called Ex-. He also painted a series called Les Meurtres (Murders). These works showed the main features of his unique style.

His art often used:

  • Different scenes, like a movie.
  • A sense of distance, often created by his use of blue.
  • Dream-like and illusionary elements.
  • A thoughtful and sometimes critical view of society.

Growing Recognition

In 1971, a special art show called "Monory Catalogue 1968-1971" was held. It was at the Modern Art Museum of Paris. This exhibition made his work very well-known.

Monory traveled to the United States twice, in 1969 and 1973. These trips were very important for his art. He took many photos and made notes. These became a collection of ideas and images for his future paintings. In 1974, he joined the famous Aimé Maeght gallery. There, he showed his "Operas Glacés" (Frozen Operas) series.
