Who is Jacqui Wood?

Jacqui Wood was born on January 4, 1950. She is an experimental archaeologist and a writer. An experimental archaeologist tries to understand the past by recreating old tools, buildings, and ways of life. Jacqui focuses on the daily lives of people in prehistoric Europe.

What Does She Do?

Since 2001, Jacqui has been the director of Saveock Water Archaeology. This organization helps us learn about ancient times. She also started and directs the Cornwall Celtic Village at Saveock. This village is a reconstructed settlement from the Bronze Age and Iron Age. It shows what homes and communities looked like long ago.

Jacqui has been an important member of several archaeology groups. She was on the National Education Committee for the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) for three years. She also served as the secretary for the CBA in the southwest region for another three years. In 1995, she joined the General Committee of the Cornwall Archaeological Society. She also worked as a consultant for the Eden Project in Cornwall, sharing her knowledge of ancient life.

Sharing Her Discoveries

Jacqui Wood has written many articles for archaeology journals and given talks at conferences. She has also appeared on TV shows that explore prehistoric homes and cooking. For example, she was on an episode of the popular show Time Team and also on The Great British Baking Show.

She has given demonstrations of Bronze Age technology for English Heritage, which looks after historic places. Jacqui also researched the grass cloak and shoes of Ötzi the Iceman, a famous mummy found in the Alps. She believes Ötzi's shoes were actually snowshoes! She even made copies of these items for the museum in Bolzano, Italy, where Ötzi is kept.

Jacqui also made a copy of the Orkney Hood for the Orkney Council. The Orkney Hood is Britain's oldest piece of fabric. She has also recreated different types of prehistoric homes. Her work helps us understand how people lived, dressed, and ate thousands of years ago. She has written about the history of food, too.

Her Books

Besides her archaeological work, Jacqui Wood has written two fantasy novels. These books are set in prehistoric times. Their titles are Cliff Dreamers and Return to the Temple of the Mother.
