He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in India's Lok Sabha, which is like the main house of the Indian Parliament, for five terms. Early Life and Challenges
Jaipal Reddy was born in a village called Nermatta in Telangana, India. From a very young age, when he was just 18 months old, he had polio. This meant he needed to use crutches to help him walk throughout his life.
He studied at Osmania University in Hyderabad and earned a Master's degree. He was also an agriculturist, meaning he worked in farming. He married Lakshmi on May 7, 1960. They had two sons and one daughter.
His Political Journey
Jaipal Reddy started his political journey as a student leader. In the 1970s, he joined the Indian National Congress party. He became a MLA for the Kalwakurthy area in Andhra Pradesh. An MLA is a representative elected to the state's legislative assembly.
He served as an MLA for four terms, from 1969 to 1984. He left the Congress Party to protest against the Indian Emergency, a period when civil liberties were suspended. He then joined the Janata Party. Later, he was the general secretary of the Janata Party from 1985 to 1988.
In 1984, he was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He rejoined the Congress Party in 1999. He was then elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004 and the 15th Lok Sabha in 2009. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the other house of Parliament, on two occasions.
Important Roles He Held
Jaipal Reddy held many important positions in the Indian government. He was known for being a spokesman for several political parties.
He served as the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting twice. The first time was in 1997–1998, and the second time was from 2004. He also had extra responsibility for Culture during his second term. He was also the Minister for Urban Development and Petroleum and Natural Gas.
In 1998, he received the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. This award recognizes members of Parliament who have done excellent work. He was the first person from South India and the youngest to receive this honor.
A Big Change in His Career
In 2012, there was a change in the government's cabinet, which is a group of top ministers. Jaipal Reddy was moved from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to the Ministry of Science and Technology. This change happened after he had some disagreements about gas allocation policies.
Some people thought he was moved because of pressure from big companies. However, he said that he needed to learn about his new role.
His Passing
Sudini Jaipal Reddy passed away on July 28, 2019. He died in Hyderabad, Telangana, due to pneumonia.
