Themes in His Books

Jakob Arjouni often wrote about people who felt like outsiders. This was usually in the setting of German society.

Kemal Kayankaya Stories

His most famous character, Kemal Kayankaya, was a private detective. Kemal was born in Turkey but was adopted by a German family when he was very young. This meant he grew up with German culture and only spoke German. Even though he looked Turkish, he didn't know much about Turkish customs. Arjouni used this character to explore ideas about identity and belonging.

Exploring Society

In books like Magic Hoffmann, Hausaufgaben, and Edelsmanns Tochter, Arjouni wrote about important social issues. He explored how some people in Germany were becoming less accepting of others. He also wrote about how people looked at history.

Future Worlds and Challenges

His novel Chez Max takes place in Paris in the year 2064. It describes a future society where the government watches everyone very closely. This happened because of big events like the 9/11 attacks. This book reminds some readers of George Orwell's famous novel 1984.

In one of his last books, Der heilige Eddy (2009), Arjouni wrote a lighter story. It was a fun adventure that was different from his usual serious topics. His thriller Cherryman jagt Mr. White (2011) tells the story of an 18-year-old in a small village. He faces unfair treatment from some young people. To deal with his feelings, he creates cartoon adventures about a hero named "Cherryman."
