James Annesley, 2nd Earl of Anglesey (born around 1645 – died 1 April 1690) was an important British nobleman. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which meant he was part of a group that promoted science. From 1661 to 1686, people called him Lord Annesley.

James Annesley was the son of Arthur Annesley, 1st Earl of Anglesey and Elizabeth Altham. He came from a well-known family.

Early Life and Education

James Annesley began his studies at Christ Church at Oxford University on 4 December 1661. This was a very famous university.

Family Life

James Annesley married Lady Elizabeth Manners on 17 September 1669. Her parents were John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland and Frances Montagu. James and Elizabeth had three children:

  • James Annesley, 3rd Earl of Anglesey (born 13 July 1674 – died 21 January 1701/2)
  • John Annesley, 4th Earl of Anglesey (born 18 January 1676 – died 18 September 1710)
  • Arthur Annesley, 5th Earl of Anglesey (born 1677 or 1683 – died 1 April 1737)

Political Career

James Annesley was involved in politics. He was a member of the Whig party.

Member of Parliament

In 1666, he was a member of parliament for County Waterford in Ireland. Later, he was chosen to represent Winchester in England. He served in the English parliament in May and October 1679, and again in 1681.

Other Roles

James Annesley held several important positions. He was a Justice of the Peace for Hampshire and Surrey from 1674 to 1681. This meant he helped keep law and order. He also led the Hampshire militia as a colonel from 1675 to 1681. A militia was a group of citizens who could be called upon to defend their area. He was also a Custos Rotulorum of Hampshire and a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire during these years. These roles involved managing local records and assisting the Lord Lieutenant.

Becoming an Earl

On 6 April 1686, James Annesley became the 2nd Earl of Anglesey. He inherited this title and others from his father. These titles included Baron Mountnorris and Baron Annesley, as well as Viscount Valentia.

Death

James Annesley passed away on 1 April 1690. He did not leave a will. His wife was given the responsibility to manage his property and money. His estate in England and Ireland was worth about £4,000 each year.
