Sir James Anstruther of Anstruther (died 1606) was an important Scottish landowner and a trusted helper in the royal court. He lived during the time of James VI of Scotland and his wife, Anne of Denmark. James Anstruther played a key role in managing the royal household and was known for his efforts to keep things running smoothly.

Early Life and Family

James Anstruther was the son of John Anstruther and Margaret Clephane. He came from a well-known family in Scotland. He married Jean Scott. Later, he also married Margaret Learmonth.

Royal Court Service

James Anstruther held several important jobs for the royal family. He started as a "carver" or "cupbearer," which meant he served the king and queen at meals.

Master of Household Role

Later, he became the Master of Household for Anne of Denmark, the Queen. This was a very important job! As Master of Household, James Anstruther was in charge of managing the Queen's home. This included:

  • Making sure there was enough food for everyone.
  • Paying the servants and other people who worked for the Queen.
  • Keeping track of all the money spent in the royal household.

King James VI was very happy with James Anstruther's work. In 1595, the King praised him for helping to save money in the Queen's household. Because of his good work, James Anstruther was given this important job for the rest of his life.

Political Challenges

In 1594, James Anstruther faced a difficult political situation. He was questioned because he was thought to be connected to a rebel leader.

He was also involved in a disagreement in Edinburgh in 1595. A gardener from Holyrood Palace was imprisoned. Queen Anne of Denmark asked James Anstruther to help rescue the gardener. He even brought tools to try and get him out! However, the city's leader, called the Provost, stepped in and moved the gardener to a different prison. This event shows how close James Anstruther was to the Queen and how he tried to help her.

Other Activities

James Anstruther was also interested in new projects. In 1598, he joined a group called the "Gentlemen Adventurers of Fife." They had a plan to settle new people on the Isle of Lewis, an island off the coast of Scotland.

In 1601, he continued his service to the King, becoming Master of Household for James VI of Scotland himself.

Legacy

James Anstruther died in 1606. His son, William Anstruther, became his heir. Another of his sons, Sir Robert Anstruther, became a famous diplomat.
