James Berkeley (born around 1394, died 1463) was an important English nobleman. People sometimes called him "James the Just." He was known as the 1st Baron Berkeley.

He was the son of Sir James de Berkeley and Elizabeth Bluet. He became the main heir to his uncle, Thomas de Berkeley. James Berkeley married four times during his life. His third wife was Lady Isabel de Mowbray. His fourth wife was Lady Joan Talbot.

Lord Berkeley was involved in a long-standing family disagreement. This was with his cousin Elizabeth and her husband, the Earl of Warwick. This disagreement was about who should own Berkeley Castle.

Becoming Lord Berkeley

At first, James Berkeley could not take control of Berkeley Castle. The Earl and Countess of Warwick held it. But in 1421, the Warwicks finally gave up the castle.

After this, James was officially called to Parliament. This meant he was recognized as Lord Berkeley. This was a big step in his life.

The Family Disagreement Continues

The disagreement with his cousin's family did not end there. James's third wife, Isabel, faced difficulties because of this feud. She was held by the Earl of Shrewsbury, who was the son-in-law of the Countess of Warwick. Sadly, Isabel passed away in 1452 while she was held.

James Berkeley's son, William, took over as Baron Berkeley after his father's death. William later became the Marquess of Berkeley in 1489.
