A Career in Politics

James Bernard was a politician for many years. He was a member of the Conservative Party. This party believed in traditional values. He served in the House of Commons. This is where elected representatives make laws. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Cork. He served in the House of Commons during three different times. These were from 1806 to 1807, 1807 to 1812, and 1818 to 1831.

Later, he became a representative peer in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the upper house of the British Parliament. Representative peers were chosen to represent Irish nobility. He served there from 1835 until he passed away.

James Bernard married Mary Susan Albinia Brodrick. They got married on March 13, 1809. Her father was Charles Brodrick. He was the Archbishop of Cashel. The wedding took place at St. John's Cathedral, Cashel. James and Mary had a son named Francis. Francis later became the 3rd Earl of Bandon. James Bernard died at Castle Bernard. He was 71 years old when he passed away in 1856.
