Early Life and Education
James Bernard Clinch was born in 1771. He was the fifth son of Joseph Clinch, a merchant from Dublin, and Margaret Higgins.
He went to school at Rev. Thomas Betagh's school. Later, he studied at the Irish College in Rome. Even though he studied there, he decided not to become a priest.
A Career in Teaching
After returning to Ireland, James Clinch first worked as a teacher. He taught at Inch Academy in Balbriggan.
In 1795, something big happened for him. A famous politician and writer named Edmund Burke recommended him for a new job. James Clinch was chosen to be one of the very first professors at the newly opened St. Patrick's College, Maynooth.
Teaching at Maynooth College
When he started at Maynooth in 1795, James Clinch was the professor of Humanity (which means he taught subjects like literature and writing). In 1798, he became the Professor of Rhetoric, focusing on the art of speaking and writing well. He taught at the college until 1802.
Becoming a Lawyer
After leaving Maynooth College, James Clinch decided to study law. He joined the Middle Temple, which is one of the places in London where lawyers are trained. He earned a law degree (an LLB).
In 1807, he became a barrister in Ireland. A barrister is a type of lawyer who represents people in court.
Family Life
James Bernard Clinch married Lisa Brennan. They had sons who also followed in their father's footsteps. Two of his sons studied at the lay college in Maynooth and later became barristers, just like their father.
