Early Days and Youth Teams
James was noticed by many talent scouts early on. He played for the Gold Coast Representative Side and an Australian team at the Under 13 National Championships. He then joined the QAS. In 2007, he was signed by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
At the AIS, James quickly became a key player. He scored 4 goals in 22 games during the 2007 Victorian Premier League season. He played alongside future stars like Luke De Vere and James Holland. Towards the end of the season, James had an injury that limited his playing time for about a year.
Playing for Gold Coast United
On 9 December 2008, James signed a three-year deal with Gold Coast United. In June 2009, he broke his right leg during training, which kept him off the field for eight weeks.
James scored his first goal for Gold Coast United on 13 January 2010. It was a great goal in a 2–0 win against the Newcastle Jets. In the first game of the 2011 season, he scored a fantastic goal that was voted "goal of the week." He continued to score important goals, earning him the "young player of the month" award in October.
Moving to Newcastle Jets
On 15 February 2012, James announced he would join A-League club Newcastle Jets. He signed a two-year contract and started playing for them in the 2012–13 A-League season.
Time with Melbourne City
James joined Melbourne City on 20 May 2014. He moved there with two other young players, Connor Chapman and Jacob Melling. He scored his first goal for the team in the 70th minute against Sydney FC.
