James Bulteel (born 1676, died 1757) was an important English politician from Tavistock in Devon. He served as a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent his local area in the country's government.

Early Life and Family History

James Bulteel was the second son of Samuel Bulteel, who passed away in 1682. James studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple starting in 1694.

The Bulteel Family Roots

The Bulteel family had an interesting history. They were Huguenots, which means they were French Protestants who had to leave France because of religious persecution. They found a new home in England. Some family records show that the Bulteels originally came from a place called Tournai in Hainault, which is now part of Belgium.

James Bulteel was also connected to another important person named John Bulteel (who died in 1669). This John Bulteel was also a Member of Parliament and worked as a secretary for a very important government official, the Lord Chancellor, during the time of King Charles II.

Political Career

James Bulteel was elected to be a Member of Parliament for Tavistock several times. He served from 1703 to 1708 and again from 1711 to 1715. As an MP, he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Important Properties and Family

In 1709, James Bulteel inherited a large estate called the manor of Flete in Devon. This was a significant property to own.

Marriage and Children

In 1718, James Bulteel married Mary Crocker. Mary was the daughter and only heir of Courtenay Crocker. When her father passed away in 1740, James and Mary inherited another important estate called Lyneham, Yealmpton.

James and Mary had six children together: two sons and four daughters.

  • James Courtenay Bulteel: He was their oldest son. Sadly, he passed away before his father in 1746. He left behind a one-year-old son, Courtenay Croker Bulteel. This young Courtenay also passed away when he was still young, before the year 1800.
  • John Bulteel: Born in 1733, John became the heir to the family's properties, including Flete and Lyneham, after his young nephew Courtenay Croker Bulteel passed away. John lived at Membland, which was a property next to Flete.
