The James Butler House is a really old and special house. You can find it at 239 North Main Street in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was built around the year 1800. This house shows a cool mix of two old building styles: Georgian and Federal. It's one of the oldest homes in West Hartford! Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1986.

What Does the James Butler House Look Like?
The James Butler House is in the northern part of West Hartford. It sits on the west side of North Main Street. The house is set back a bit from the road. This is further back than the newer houses nearby.
House Features
The house has two and a half stories. It is made of wood. It has a covering of aluminum siding. There are two chimneys inside the house. The front of the house has five sections with windows.
The windows have shutters. The main front door is in the middle. Above the door, there is a small window with four glass panes. Inside, the house has a central hallway. The fireplace in the main living room has fancy wood panels. These panels show the Georgian style. A single-story part extends from the back of the house. This part might have been built at the same time as the main house.
Who Lived in the James Butler House?
The James Butler House was built a long time ago. It was built between 1789 and 1816. Either Gideon Butler or his son, James Butler, built it.
The Butler Family History
The Butler family has a long history in the area. Gideon and James were related to Joseph Butler. Joseph was one of the first English settlers in this part of Connecticut. The house stayed in the Butler family for a very long time. Their descendants owned it until the 1960s.
