James Cecil, 3rd Earl of Salisbury (born 1648 – died June 1683) was an important English nobleman and politician. He was known as Viscount Cranborne from 1660 to 1668. He held the title of Earl of Salisbury, which is a high rank in the British nobility.

James Cecil was born in 1648. His father was Charles Cecil, Viscount Cranborne. His grandfather was William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. His mother was Lady Diana Maxwell.
Early Life and Education
It is believed that James Cecil went to St John's College, Cambridge. This is a famous university in England. In 1668, when he was about 20 years old, he became the Earl of Salisbury. He inherited this important title from his grandfather.
Political Career
James Cecil became a Privy Councillor in 1679. A Privy Councillor is a special advisor to the King or Queen. A year later, in 1680, he was made a Knight of the Garter. This is a very old and important award given by the British monarch. However, he later faced some political difficulties. He was removed from the Council a few months before he died.
Family Life
On October 1, 1661, James Cecil married Lady Margaret Manners. She was the daughter of Francis Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland. They had two sons, James and Robert Cecil (1670–1716). They also had a daughter named Lady Margaret Cecil.
James Cecil passed away in June 1683. His eldest son, James, then took over his titles.
