Her Family Background

Margaret came from a very important family herself. Her father was John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland. Her mother was Frances Montagu, who was also a Countess. Margaret had several sisters who also married into noble families. Three of her sisters, Frances, Elizabeth, and Dorothy, also became countesses. Another sister, Anne, became a "Viscountess," which is another noble title, just below a Countess.

Her Marriage

Margaret Manners married James Cecil on October 1, 1661. At the time, he was not yet an Earl. He became the 3rd Earl of Salisbury seven years later, after his grandfather passed away. When he became an Earl, Margaret became the Countess of Salisbury.

Margaret and James had many children together. Some of their children sadly passed away when they were very young. Their children included:

  • Lady Margaret Cecil (1672-1728), who married twice. Her first husband was John Stawel, 2nd Baron Stawel. Her second husband was Richard Jones, 1st Earl of Ranelagh.
  • Lady Mildred Cecil (died 1727), who also married twice. Her first husband was Sir Uvedale Corbet, 3rd Baronet. Her second husband was Sir Charles Hotham, 4th Baronet. She had children from both marriages.
