James Churchill Omosanya Vaughan Jr. (born May 30, 1893 – died 1937) was an important Nigerian doctor. He was also a well-known political activist. This means he worked hard to bring about change in his country.

Early Life and Schooling

James Vaughan Jr. was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on May 30, 1893. His father, James Wilson Vaughan, was a successful merchant in Lagos. The Vaughan family had roots that went back to the 19th century.

James Jr. was one of the very first students at King's College, Lagos. This school opened in 1909. After King's College, he went to the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Studying Medicine in Scotland

From 1913 to 1918, James Vaughan Jr. and Isaac Ladipo Oluwole studied medicine there. They were the first two Nigerian students at that university. They both earned their medical degrees in 1918.

While studying, they sometimes faced unfair treatment because of their race. This was a difficult experience for them.

Helping People as a Doctor

After finishing his studies, Dr. Vaughan returned to Nigeria in the early 1920s. He opened his own private medical clinic. He also made sure to offer free medical help to people who were very poor and could not pay.

Dr. Vaughan was interested in traditional Nigerian medicines. He tried to gather the research of another pioneering Nigerian doctor, Oguntola Sapara. Dr. Sapara had studied local herbal medicines, but his notes were not complete.

Fighting for Nigeria's Future

Dr. Vaughan became a strong voice against the British Colonial Administration. This was the British government that ruled Nigeria at the time. He believed Nigeria should have more control over its own affairs.

Starting the Youth Movement

In 1934, Dr. Vaughan helped start the Lagos Youth Movement. Other important activists like Dr. Kofo Abayomi and Ernest Sissei Ikoli were also part of this group. Dr. Vaughan was the first president of the movement.

The Lagos Youth Movement first aimed to improve higher education in Nigeria. But in just four years, it grew much bigger. It became the most important group working for Nigeria's independence. In 1936, it changed its name to the Nigerian Youth Movement. This showed that its goals were for all of Nigeria, not just Lagos.

One of the early issues the movement focused on was improving medical teaching. This was at the Yaba Higher College.
