James Cloyd Bowman (born January 18, 1880 – died September 27, 1961) was an American author and teacher. He is best known for writing books for children, especially about famous American folk heroes. He also wrote textbooks for colleges and articles for journals.

About James Cloyd Bowman

James Cloyd Bowman was born in Leipsic, Ohio. He grew up in Ohio and went to Ohio Northern University. He later studied at Harvard University.

After finishing his studies, Bowman became an English teacher. He taught at Iowa State College (which is now Iowa State University) and then at Northern State Teachers College. This college is now known as Northern Michigan University. At Northern State Teachers College, he was in charge of the English department from 1921 to 1939.

Famous Books and Awards

James Cloyd Bowman wrote many books, especially for young readers. One of his most famous books is Pecos Bill: The Greatest Cowboy of All Time. This book tells the exciting stories of Pecos Bill, a legendary cowboy.

In 1938, Pecos Bill received a Newbery Honor. This is a special award given to authors for excellent children's literature. Later, in 1958, Pecos Bill also won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award.
