James Craig Annan (born March 8, 1864 – died June 5, 1946) was a very important Scottish photographer. He was known for being a pioneer, meaning he was one of the first to do new things in photography. He was also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Early Life and Learning

James Craig Annan was born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. His father, Thomas Annan, was also a photographer. James was born on March 8, 1864.

He went to school at Hamilton Academy. After that, he studied chemistry and natural philosophy. He went to Anderson's College in Glasgow. This college later became part of the University of Strathclyde.

Joining the Family Business

After his studies, James joined his family's photography business. It was called T. & R. Annan and Sons. They had offices in Glasgow, Hamilton, and Edinburgh.

In 1883, James traveled to Vienna. He went there to learn a special printing method. This method was called photogravure. It was invented by Karel Klíč.

James brought the photogravure process to Britain. His family's company bought the rights to use it. T. & R. Annan became the best company in Britain for gravure photographic printing. This method helped them print photos with great detail.

Photography as Art

In 1891, James Annan became a member of the Glasgow Art Club. He was recognized as a "photographic artist." This showed that photography was starting to be seen as an art form.

In 1893, he showed his own photogravure work. He exhibited it at the Photographic Salon. Because of this, he was chosen to join The Linked Ring in 1894.

The Linked Ring Group

The Linked Ring was a special group of art photographers. It was also known as "The Brotherhood of the Linked Ring." This group believed that photography was an art, just like painting. They wanted to push photography further into the art world.

Members of The Linked Ring looked for new ways to take and print photos. They encouraged photographers to try new chemical processes. They also explored different printing techniques and styles. James Annan was a key part of this artistic movement.

He also gave talks about photography. He spoke to the Edinburgh Photographic Society. In 1901, he talked about The Arts of Engraving. In 1910, he spoke about Photography as a Means of Artistic Expression.

In 1900, the Royal Photographic Society asked Annan to have his own show. This was the first of many such shows at their new rooms in London. Later, he was given an Honorary Fellowship by the Society. This was a great honor for his work.

Impact in North America

Annan's work also had a big impact in North America. His photos were shown at Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession Galleries in New York. Stieglitz was a very famous American photographer.

Annan's work was also featured in American photography magazines. It appeared in Camera Notes (1897-1903). It was also in Camera Work (1903-1917). Both magazines were published by Stieglitz. Annan's studio made many of the photogravures for Camera Work.
