James Crofton was an important person in Ireland during the early 1800s. He held a very significant job as the Chief Clerk of the Irish Treasury in 1804. This meant he helped manage the government's money and finances. He also played a big part in developing a major harbour in Ireland.

Who Was James Crofton?

James Crofton was a notable figure who held important roles in Irish public life. He was known for his work in government finance and for his contributions to building new infrastructure.

Family Life and Early Years

James Crofton married Frances Stanley on January 9, 1797. Their wedding took place at St. Ann's parish. At the time of his marriage, James Crofton was living on Kildare Street.

Owning Roebuck Castle

Around the year 1802, James Crofton bought Roebuck Castle in County Dublin. He purchased this historic castle from Nicholas Barnewall, 14th Baron Trimlestown. Owning such a castle showed his importance and wealth at the time.

Developing Dún Laoghaire Harbour

One of James Crofton's most important roles was as a harbour commissioner. From 1816 until his death in 1828, he helped manage the Royal Harbour of George IV at Kingstown. This harbour is now known as Dún Laoghaire Harbour.

He worked alongside his oldest son, Arthur Burgh Crofton, to develop this new harbour. Their efforts were crucial in building and improving this important port.

A Lasting Legacy

Because of their hard work on the harbour, a street in Dún Laoghaire was renamed in their honour. In 1876, Susan Street became Crofton Road. This name change recognized the significant contributions of James Crofton and his son.

His son, Arthur Burgh Crofton, also became the Sheriff of County Dublin in 1842, continuing the family's involvement in public service.

Later Life and Burial

James Crofton passed away on June 2, 1828. He was buried at Taney graveyard.
