James Cunningham (born around 1817 – died April 27, 1915) was an important political leader in Manitoba. He served as a representative for the area of Headingly in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1870 to 1874. This assembly is like the province's main decision-making group.

Early Life and Family

James Cunningham was born in either Fort Churchill or Île-à-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan. His father, Patrick Cunningham, worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, a very old and famous trading company.

Growing Up in Manitoba

After his father passed away, James's family moved to Kildonan in 1828. This area is located along the Red River. James later married Sarah, who was the daughter of a well-known fur trader named Alexander Ross. They lived in places like Headingley and Poplar Point. After Sarah passed away, James married Letitia Pritchard.

Political Career

James Cunningham became a politician in Manitoba. He wanted to represent the people of his area in the government.

First Election Challenge

In 1870, Manitoba held its very first general election. James Cunningham ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly. At first, it looked like he had lost to another candidate, John Taylor. However, after a closer look, some votes were found to be incorrect. Because of this, James Cunningham was then declared the winner and became a member of the assembly. He served for four years, helping to make laws and decisions for Manitoba.

Later Life and Legacy

James Cunningham passed away on April 27, 1915, in Somerset. He was buried in Kildonan, the place where his family had settled many years before. He is remembered as one of Manitoba's early political figures.
