James Douglas, 2nd Marquess of Douglas (born around 1646 – died February 25, 1700), was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the son of Archibald Douglas, who was the Earl of Angus and the 1st Earl of Ormond, and Lady Anne Stuart.

Early Life and Noble Titles
James Douglas was born in 1646. When he was about 14 years old, in 1660, he became the 2nd Marquess of Douglas. He took over this important title from his grandfather, William Douglas.
As a respected nobleman, James Douglas served as a privy councillor for two kings: King Charles II and King James VII of Scotland. A privy councillor was a trusted advisor to the king, helping with important decisions for the country. James Douglas passed away on February 25, 1700, at the age of 53 or 54.
Family and Succession
James Douglas had several children. His first marriage was in 1670 to Lady Barbara Erskine. She was the daughter of John Erskine, the 21st Earl of Mar. Later, he married Mary Kerr, who was the daughter of Robert Kerr, the 1st Marquess of Lothian.
His Brave Son, James
James Douglas's eldest son, also named James, was born in 1671. He became known as the Earl of Angus. In 1689, when he was just 18, he showed great leadership. He managed to gather 1,800 men in a single day to form a new army regiment. This group became known as the Cameronians. Young James was made the colonel, or leader, of this regiment on April 19, 1689.
James, Earl of Angus, was a brave soldier. He fought in many battles. Sadly, he died at the Battle of Steinkirk on August 3, 1692. He was only 20 years old and had not yet married.
Future Marquesses
James Douglas also had a half-brother named William, who held the title of Earl of Angus for a short time but died as a baby in 1694. After the death of his eldest son, James, the title of Marquess of Douglas passed to his third son, Archibald. Archibald became the 3rd Marquess of Douglas.
The Ballad of Waly Waly
The story of the end of James Douglas's first marriage to Barbara Erskine is remembered in an old folk song called Waly Waly. This song is also known by other names like Jamie Douglas. The song tells a sad tale about their marriage. According to the lyrics, in 1681, a rumor was spread to James Douglas that Barbara Erskine had been unfaithful. Because of this rumor, he ended their marriage. Barbara's father took her back home, and she never married again.
