James Drummond, 1st Lord Maderty facts for kids
James Drummond, 1st Lord Maderty (born around 1540, died 1623) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was known for his close relationship with King James VI of Scotland, who later became King James I of England. James Drummond received many special favors and titles from the king throughout his life.
Early Life and Education
James Drummond was the second son of David Drummond, 2nd Lord Drummond. His mother was Lilias, the eldest daughter of Lord Ruthven. James grew up alongside the young King James VI. This special upbringing meant the king always treated him kindly.
When James Drummond became an adult, his father gave him control of the lands and titles of the Abbey of Inchaffray. This abbey was in an area called Strathearn. Because he controlled the abbey's lands, he was known as the "commendator" of Inchaffray. He also gained control of other important areas like Auchterarder, Kincardine, and Drymen.
Serving the King
In 1580, King James VI gave James Drummond a special job. He was made a gentleman of the bedchamber. This meant he was a close attendant to the king.
In 1600, James Drummond was with the king in Perth during an event known as the Gowrie conspiracy. After this event, he provided information about what happened.
Becoming Lord Maderty
In 1609, King James VI made a big change for James Drummond. The king turned the Abbey of Inchaffray into a "temporal lordship." This meant it was no longer a religious property but a noble title. The king then made James Drummond a peer, giving him the title of Lord Maderty. The name "Maderty" came from the parish where Inchaffray was located.
James Drummond continued to receive more lands and titles from the king. These included Easter Craigton in 1611, more of Auchterarder in 1615, and Innerpeffray in 1618.
Family Life
James Drummond passed away in September 1623. He was married to Jean Chisholm. Jean's mother was the heiress of Sir John Drummond of Innerpeffray. This marriage brought the Innerpeffray property into James Drummond's family.
James and Jean had two sons:
- John, who became the second Lord Maderty.
- James, who was known as James of Machany.
They also had four daughters: Lilias, Jean, Margaret, and Catherine.
