The James E. Hooper House is a historic home located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It was built in 1886 for a man named James E. Hooper. This large building is a great example of the Queen Anne style. It stands proudly among the buildings of the Old Goucher College Buildings complex.

The house is built with dark red bricks. It has special decorations made from terra cotta, brownstone, and granite. The roof is covered with slate shingles. There's also a cool square window that sticks out, called an oriel.

About the James E. Hooper House

The James E. Hooper House is a rectangular building. It has a roof that slopes steeply. There is also a small, two-story section that extends from the main house. Another part of the house is a two-and-a-half-story bay window. This window section also has its own small gable roof.

The main part of the house has two stories. There are two more stories found within the gable part of the roof. The outside of the house features a green wooden oriel window. This window is three bays wide and one bay deep.

History of the House

The James E. Hooper House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is an important historical building.

In 2001, a group called Morphius Development Consortium bought the house. They worked to bring back its original look. They painted the outside wood trim green again. They also fixed many things inside, like special sliding doors and decorative wooden wall panels.

Later, in 2018, a new group called James Hooper LLC bought the property. Their goal was to make the house a place for culture. They also wanted it to be a home for small businesses.

The Fire Incident

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, a fire started in the attic of the building. The flames burned for about an hour. Many firefighters and trucks came to put out the fire.

Two people living in a nearby apartment building saw the smoke. They called the Baltimore City Fire Department before the house alarms even went off. This quick action helped save three people who were inside the house at the time.

The fire mostly stayed in the attic where it began. However, smoke and water caused a lot of damage to the rest of the inside of the house. Artists who had spaces there were especially affected. The day after the fire, they brought their paintings outside to dry.

It is not clear what caused the fire. But the building was making a lot of smoke before the flames got bigger. Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire. Right after the fire, James Hooper LLC began to rebuild and fix the house.
