Sir James Earle (1755–1817) was a very famous British surgeon. He was especially known for his amazing skill in a type of surgery called lithotomy, which involves removing stones from the bladder.

Early Life and Medical Training

James Earle was born in London in 1755. He studied medicine at a well-known hospital called St Bartholomew's Hospital. In 1770, he became an assistant surgeon there.

Between 1776 and 1784, one of the hospital's main surgeons was unable to work. Because of this, James Earle bravely performed a huge number of operations – about one-third of all surgeries at St Bartholomew's during that time! His hard work and skill were recognized, and he was chosen to be a full surgeon on May 22, 1784. He continued in this role until 1815. Just two years later, he was given a special job as a surgeon to George III, who was the King of England at the time.

Achievements and Family

Sir James Earle achieved many important things during his life. In March 1794, he was chosen to be a fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for important scientists and thinkers. In 1807, he was knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir" by the King for his great contributions.

He married the daughter of Percivall Pott, who was a very important senior surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Their third son, Henry Earle, also followed in his father's footsteps and became a surgeon at the same hospital.

Medical Writings and Legacy

Sir James Earle was not only a skilled surgeon but also a writer. He wrote a special book about Percivall Pott, his father-in-law, which was later added to Pott's collected works in 1790. He also wrote a biography about another doctor named William Austin.

Earle was most famous for his surgical skills, especially with lithotomy operations. He also published several important medical books and papers, sharing his knowledge with other doctors. Some of his notable works include:

  • A Treatise on the Hydrocele (first published in 1791, with updates in later years)
  • Practical Observations on the Operation for Stone (1793)
  • A New Method of Operation for Cataract (1801)
  • Letter on Fractures of the Lower Limbs (1807)

These writings helped to improve medical practices and teach future generations of surgeons.
