James Alexander Elphinstone (born April 22, 1953 – died December 19, 1994) was a British nobleman. He held the titles of the 18th Lord Elphinstone and 4th Baron Elphinstone. He was also a farmer and worked in finance. He was a professional member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which means he was an expert in land, property, and construction.
Early Life and Education
James Elphinstone was the son of Reverend Andrew Charles Victor Elphinstone and Jean Frances Hambro. His grandparents were Sidney Buller-Fullerton-Elphinstone, 16th Lord Elphinstone and Lady Mary Bowes-Lyon. Lady Mary was the older sister of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II. This means James Elphinstone was related to the British Royal Family!
He went to two well-known schools. First, he studied at Eton College, a famous boarding school for boys. After that, he attended the Royal Agricultural College. This college teaches about farming and managing land.
Family Life
On April 22, 1978, James Elphinstone married Willa Mary Gabrielle Chetwode. Willa was the daughter of Major George David Chetwode. Her mother, Lady Willa Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, was also from a noble family.
James and Willa had four children together:
- Alexander Mountstuart Elphinstone, born on April 15, 1980. He married Nicola J. Hall in 2007, and they have three children.
- The Honorable Angus John Elphinstone, born in 1982. He married Isobel L. Smith in 2013, and they also have three children:

- Sienna Grace Elphinstone (born February 23, 2021)
- The Honorable Fergus David Elphinstone, born in 1985. He married Rosie Davies in 2016, and they have one son:

- The Honorable Clementina Rose Elphinstone, born in 1989. She married Oliver William Salusbury Harrison in 2020.
