James Evans is an American leader in politics and business. He was the Chair of the Utah Republican Party from 2013 to 2017. He was the first African-American person to hold this important position. Before that, he was also the first African-American to serve as a Utah State Senator.
Early Life and Education
James Evans was born in 1962 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He grew up there and went to Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. After high school, he attended Tuskegee University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the university.

Evans served in the United States Air Force. He reached the rank of captain during his time in the Air Force.
Public Service in Utah
From 2002 to 2004, James Evans was a member of the Utah State Senate. He represented the 1st district during his time as a state senator.
Later, he became the Chair of the Utah Republican Party. He held this leadership role for four years, from 2013 to 2017. After his term, Rob Anderson took over as the new Chair.
