Early Life and Education
James Forbes was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1779. He received his early education at Marischal College in Aberdeen. Later, he went on to study medicine at the famous University of Edinburgh. There, he earned his degree as a Doctor of Medicine (MD).
A Doctor in the Army
In 1803, Forbes began his career in the army. He started as an assistant-surgeon with the 30th regiment. By 1809, he became a surgeon for the 95th regiment and then a staff-surgeon in the same year.
Important Missions
Forbes was part of the difficult retreat from Corunna during the Napoleonic Wars. Right after that, he joined an expedition to Walcheren. This was a very challenging time because many soldiers became sick with fevers and other camp illnesses. Forbes was praised for his great skill and dedication in helping the sick soldiers.
He then returned to serve in the Peninsula, where he was promoted to physician to the forces. This meant he was a senior doctor for the army.
After the Wars
After the wars ended, James Forbes continued his important work. He was put in charge of a large hospital built in Colchester. This hospital cared for soldiers who were sick or wounded from the Battle of Waterloo.
He then held several other important positions. He became the superintendent of Chelsea Hospital, which is a famous home for army veterans. Later, he was the medical director at Chatham.
Later Career and Achievements
In 1822, Forbes went back to serving overseas. He worked in places like the West Indies, Nova Scotia, and Canada. These were often challenging environments for health.
In 1829, he was appointed as the main medical officer in Ceylon (which is now Sri Lanka). He worked there until 1836. The climate in Ceylon was very hard on his health, and he returned home unwell.
Final Years
Despite his failing health, James Forbes was promoted to inspector-general of hospitals. This was a very high rank. He was also chosen to lead the army medical department in India. However, he was too ill to take on this new role.
James Forbes passed away in London on November 7, 1837, at the age of 59. He was buried in Rochester Cathedral. Although he was a very important doctor, it seems he did not publish any medical writings.
