The James Gowing Farm, also known as Staghead Farm, is a very old farm on Page Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. Today, it is the main part of the Dublin Christian Academy school campus.

The first house was built around 1788 by James Gowing, Jr. It was a small, one-and-a-half-story house. Over time, more buildings were added. Many of these newer buildings were built in the 1930s in a style called Colonial Revival. This style looks like old American colonial homes. The original house was also fixed up at this time. The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it is an important historical place that should be protected.

The James Gowing Farm: A Historic Place

The James Gowing Farm started with a house built by James Gowing, Jr., in 1788. He had just moved to the area. This house was built in the "Cape style," which is a common type of old American home.

In the 1930s, the farm grew a lot. Many new buildings were added around the original house. These new buildings, and the restored old house, were designed in the Colonial Revival style. This style brings back the look of buildings from America's early history.

Who Lived Here? A Look at Past Owners

The James Gowing Farm has had several interesting owners over the years.

  • The Gowing Family: James Gowing, Jr.'s son, Almerin, was an important person in the town. He was a local militia leader, like a leader of the town's volunteer army. He was also a "town selectman," which is like a member of the town's governing council.
  • Samuel Hale: In 1853, Samuel Hale bought the farm. He later became the Governor of New Hampshire from 1882 to 1883. The governor is the leader of the state government.
  • Louis Cabot: In 1895, Louis Cabot bought the farm. His family made Cabot Stain, a well-known product for wood. He made the farm part of his large "gentleman's farm." This was a big farm owned by a wealthy person, often for pleasure or as a hobby, not just for making money from crops.
  • Selina Riker: After the farm became a bit run down in the 1920s and 1930s, Mrs. Selina Riker bought it in 1937. She had inherited money from the Riker Drug company. Mrs. Riker hired architects named Belknap & Weir. They designed the new Colonial Revival farm complex, making the old Gowing farmhouse a part of it.
  • F. Nelson Blount: In 1954, F. Nelson Blount bought the property. He was the president of Ocean Spray, a company famous for cranberry products. In 1964, Mr. Blount gave the farm to help start the Dublin Christian Academy.
