The James Grieve is a classic type of apple. It's named after the person who first grew it, James Grieve. This special apple was first grown in Edinburgh, Scotland, sometime before 1893. It's thought to be a mix of two other apple types: 'Pott's Seedling' and 'Cox's Orange Pippin'.

About the James Grieve Apple

The James Grieve apple is known for its unique taste. When you first bite into it, it's juicy and a bit tart. This strong, sour taste slowly becomes milder as the apple ripens in September.

You can enjoy this apple in different ways. If you pick it early, it's great for cooking. It becomes a sweet and delicate stewed apple. As it gets riper, it turns into a delicious dessert apple that you can eat fresh.

Why is it Special?

James Grieve apples used to be very popular across Europe. They were sent to city markets by train or horse-and-cart. But these apples bruise easily. Because of this, they had to be packed very carefully. People would use wicker baskets, like laundry baskets, and fill them with straw to protect the fruit.

Today, you won't often find James Grieve apples in big supermarkets. They just can't handle the rough journey and handling. Instead, you'll mostly find them in gardens or sold directly by farmers.

Even so, the James Grieve is still a fantastic apple. Here's why:

  • It tastes amazing.
  • It produces lots of fruit every single year.
  • It's good at fighting off diseases.
  • It helps other apple trees grow fruit by being a good polleniser.
  • It's also excellent for making fresh apple juice.

Sometimes, if the weather is very warm, these apples might fall off the tree a bit early.

Descendants

The James Grieve apple has been used to create new apple types. Some of its "children" varieties include:

  • Reglindis
  • Remo
  • Sunset
