James Hewlett's Early Career

James Hewlett began his acting career as a singer and performer. He was known for his strong performances in the African Grove Theatre. This theater started as a small show in William Alexander Brown's tea garden. Hewlett became famous for playing the lead role in the play Richard III. This was a very important role for a Black actor at that time.

Touring After the African Grove Theatre

After the African Grove Theatre closed, James Hewlett continued to perform. He traveled around, acting out parts from famous plays. Some historians believe he was one of the most well-known Black New Yorkers around 1831. He even visited the United Kingdom and performed in Liverpool.

Later Life and Legacy

James Hewlett's acting career seemed to slow down after 1834. He faced some personal difficulties during this time. He is thought to have passed away around 1849.
