James Home was also known as Sir James Home of Whitriggs and Coldenknowes. Coldenknowes (sometimes spelled Cowdenknowes) was a Scottish area in Berwickshire, southeast of Edinburgh. This land belonged to his grandfather, John Home.
Becoming an Earl
James Home became the Earl of Home after his cousin, James Home, 2nd Earl of Home, died in 1633. This meant he inherited the title and responsibilities that came with being an Earl.
His Own Family
James Home married Jean Douglas. She was the daughter of William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton. Jean passed away in 1694.
