James J. Browne used to be the President of the University of Galway. He was chosen for this role in 2008. He served for ten years, finishing his term in January 2018.
About James J. Browne
James J. Browne is an expert in engineering. He studied engineering at the University of Galway. Later, he earned his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1980. In 1989, he became a Professor of Production Engineering at the University of Galway.
He received another special degree, a DSc, in 1990. This was for his published work on how to design and use computer-controlled manufacturing systems. He became the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 1995. In 2000, he was made Registrar and Deputy President of the University.
His Research Work
Mr. Browne's research focused on how to design and run automated factories. He looked at how to control machines on the factory floor. He also studied how businesses manage their systems. This included flexible manufacturing and assembly lines. He also researched how to recycle products (reverse logistics). His work also covered modern ideas like Industry 4.0. This is about smart factories and connected machines. He also studied Circular Manufacturing Systems. This means making things in a way that creates less waste.
He has written many books and papers. He published 11 books and over 400 papers. One of his books, 'Production Management Systems', was even translated into French and Chinese.
Awards and Recognition
Mr. Browne is a member of the Royal Irish Academy. This is a group of top experts in Ireland. He is also a Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering.
He received a special award from France. It is called the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques. This award is given for achievements in education and research. The French Ambassador in Ireland gave him this honour.
His Family
James J. Browne is married to Maeve. They have four sons together. Their names are Lorcan, Shane, Ronan, and Fergus. All of his sons went to St Joseph's Patrician College. They all became engineering graduates while their father was President of the University of Galway.
His brother is Raymond Browne. Raymond is a Bishop in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kerry.
