James J. McCrea was an important figure in Irish public life. He was known for his work as a farmer and businessman. He also dedicated many years to politics, representing the Labour Party.
Serving in the Seanad
Mr. McCrea was a member of Seanad Éireann for almost ten years. The Seanad is one of the two parts of the Irish parliament.
- In 1948, he was first chosen for the 6th Seanad. The Taoiseach (Ireland's Prime Minister) picked him for this role.
- Later, in 1951, he was elected to the 7th Seanad. He was chosen by a special group called the Administrative Panel. This panel includes people who work in public services.
- He was elected again in 1954 to the 8th Seanad. This time, he was chosen by the Agricultural Panel, which represents people involved in farming.
Mr. McCrea decided not to run for the Seanad election in 1957.
Trying for the Dáil
Besides serving in the Seanad, James J. McCrea also tried to become a member of Dáil Éireann. The Dáil is the main part of Ireland's parliament.
He ran as a Labour Party candidate for the Wicklow area two times:
