The James Kinney Farmstead, also known as Country Mile Farm, is a historic property located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Belmont, Ohio. You can find it right on SR 147. This special 57-acre (23 ha) farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 29, 1999. It is one of only four farmsteads in the area to receive this important recognition.

History of the Farmstead

James Kinney bought this land in 1852 from John Franz. At that time, there was a simple log cabin near where the main house stands today. The big house you see now was built in 1863. It looks very much the same as it did when it was first built.

This farm was once a busy "drove station." This means it was a stop for people called drovers who moved large groups of livestock, like cattle or sheep, from one place to another. Hundreds of drovers and their animals passed by this house. In 1957, Floyd Simpson bought the property. Today, his sons are working to restore the farmstead.

Exploring the Exterior

The main house is built in the Greek Revival style. It features red bricks and white wooden trim. The house has many rectangular windows with dark shutters.

Front of the House

The front of the house has a central porch area called a portico. This portico is supported by strong Doric columns. You reach the front door by climbing a flight of stairs. The entrance is framed by two windows on each side. The second floor has five windows that line up perfectly with the windows and door below.

Outbuildings and Grounds

Around the main house, you'll find several other old buildings. These include a smokehouse, a summer kitchen, and a wood and coal house. There's also a corncrib-wagon shed and a carriage house.

A large barn made of timber is located to the south of the house. It was built in 1874 using white pine and poplar wood. The oldest building on the property is across SR 147 from the barn. This structure was already there before James Kinney bought the farm.

Natural Features

The property also has some interesting natural features. There is a 190-foot (58 m) loess mound, which is a hill made of fine soil. You can also see a part of the original drovers' road where livestock used to travel. Plus, there are 5 acres (2.0 ha) of old, untouched forest connected to Dysart Woods.
