James Leach (composer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Leach (born 1761, died 1798) was an English composer who wrote music for churches. He is known for his nonconformist church music. This means he wrote for churches that were not part of the main Church of England at the time.

Life Story of James Leach

James Leach was born in a place called Wardle, near Rochdale, in Lancashire, England.

Early Life and Music

When he was young, James worked as a hand-loom weaver, making cloth. But he loved music and spent his free time studying it. Eventually, he became a full-time musician.

He became very good at playing music. He even played in the king's band, which was a big honor! James also became well-known as a music teacher and a leader for church choirs. He was also a talented singer, especially as a countertenor, which is a male singer with a very high voice. He sang in important music events, including those at Westminster Abbey.

Later Years and Legacy

Around 1795, James Leach moved to Salford. Sadly, he died there on February 8, 1798, after being in an accident involving a stage-coach.

He was buried in the cemetery of Union Street Wesleyan Chapel in Rochdale. His grave has a special marker: a stone with one of his own short tunes, called 'Egypt,' carved into it.
