Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Livingstone, born on June 25, 1616, was an important Scottish nobleman. He was a strong supporter of the King during a difficult time in Scotland's history. In 1661, he was given the special titles of Viscount Kilsyth and Lord Campsie.

James Livingstone's Early Life

James Livingstone was born on June 25, 1616. His father was Sir William Livingstone of Kilsyth. Sir William was a "Lord of Session," which meant he was a judge in Scotland's highest court.

James was very loyal to the King. During a time of great change, he defended Kilsyth Castle against Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was a powerful leader who went against the King.

Because of James's loyalty, King Charles II sent him a special letter of thanks in 1650. However, Cromwell's government did not like James. In 1654, James was excluded from a special pardon called "Cromwell's Act of Grace." He also had to pay a large fine of £1,500.

Political Career and Titles

After the King returned to power, a time known as the Restoration, James continued his public service. In 1661, he became a member of the Parliament of Scotland. He represented the area of Stirlingshire.

On August 17, 1661, James received a great honor. He was made a "peer of Scotland." This meant he was given noble titles: Viscount Kilsyth and Lord Campsie. Sadly, he died soon after, on September 7, 1661, in London.

James Livingstone's Family

James Livingstone married Eupheme, who was the daughter of Sir Robert Cunningham of Robertland. They had two sons and two daughters.

Their oldest son, James, became the 2nd Viscount Kilsyth. Their second son, William, became the 3rd and last Viscount. William was involved in a rebellion in 1715. Because of this, he lost his titles and property and had to live in exile in Holland. He passed away there in 1733.

Of James's two daughters, Elizabeth married General Robert Montgomery. Anne, his other daughter, never married.
