James Macdonald Oxley (October 22, 1855 – September 9, 1907) was a Canadian writer. He is famous for writing exciting adventure stories for young people. His books often featured historical events and thrilling travels.

Early Life and Education
James Macdonald Oxley was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His father, James Black Oxley, was a merchant. James went to Halifax Grammar School. Later, he studied at Dalhousie University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1874. While at university, he helped edit the Dalhousie Gazette newspaper.
He then decided to study law. He attended Harvard University for a year. In 1878, he received his law degree from a university in Halifax.
A Career in Law and Writing
After finishing his studies, James Oxley worked as a lawyer in Halifax for five years. Later, he moved to Ottawa. There, he became a legal advisor for the Canadian government's Department of Marine and Fisheries.
In 1880, he married Mary Morrow. Besides his main job, he also worked as an editor. He edited Nova Scotia Decisions from 1880 to 1883. He also edited Admiralty Decisions in 1882. From 1881 to 1883, he reported on news from the House of Assembly. In 1891, he became a manager for the Sun Life Assurance Company.

Even with a busy career, James Oxley found time for his passion: writing. He started writing adventure books especially for boys. His stories were often based on real historical events. They took place in Canada and the United States. Many of his books focused on exciting travel and adventure themes.
