James Burlton Mathews (born June 1, 1968 – died December 24, 1992) was a talented Australian rugby league player. He played in the top-level competition in New South Wales, Australia. This competition was known as the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL).

His Rugby League Career

James started his journey in rugby league at Yanco Agricultural College. After that, he joined the Illawarra Steelers team in 1988. He played for the Steelers until 1991. During his time with the Steelers, he played 22 games. He scored 42 points for the team.

Playing for the Roosters

In 1992, James moved to the Eastern Suburbs club. This team is now known as the Sydney Roosters. He quickly became a very important player for them. That year, he led the Roosters in scoring points. He was especially good at kicking goals. His career average for goal kicking was 71.89% success. This means he kicked the ball through the posts almost three-quarters of the time.

His Legacy

Sadly, James Mathews passed away in a car accident on December 24, 1992. He was a promising young player. To honor his memory, the Sydney Roosters now name their Club Player of the Year award after him.
