James Merritt Ives (born March 5, 1824 – died January 3, 1895) was an American artist, businessman, and a master of lithography. He is best known for his work with the famous company Currier and Ives. He managed the business and money side of the company, working closely with his partner, Nathaniel Currier.

The Life of James Merritt Ives

James Merritt Ives was born in New York City on March 5, 1824. His father was in charge of Bellevue Hospital in the city. Even though James started working at age 12, he loved art and taught himself a lot. He learned by visiting art galleries and the Astor Library.

On June 24, 1846, James married Caroline Clark. They had six children together. Caroline's sister-in-law was married to Nathaniel Currier's brother, Charles. Charles told Nathaniel about James, and Nathaniel hired James in 1852. James started as a bookkeeper for Nathaniel's company, N. Currier, Lithographer.

Joining Currier & Ives

It quickly became clear that James was very talented. He had a great eye for art and knew what people wanted to buy. His skills in business and marketing helped the company grow a lot. James made Currier's bookkeeping better and more modern. He also helped organize the company's supplies and made production smoother.

In 1857, Nathaniel Currier made James a full partner in the company. The firm was then renamed Currier and Ives. James became the general manager. In this new role, he helped Nathaniel choose artists and craftsmen. He also helped pick which pictures the company would print. James was key in creating the popular images of everyday American life that made the company so famous.

The Legacy of Currier & Ives

The company Currier and Ives became well-known for its popular and affordable art prints. They made pictures of many things, like winter scenes, beautiful landscapes, and exciting sporting events. They also printed images of ships and other important parts of 19th-century life. These prints are still very popular with collectors today.

James Ives worked at the company for over 40 years. He passed away in Rye, New York, in 1895. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. After James's death, his sons and Nathaniel Currier's sons continued to run the business. The company finally closed in 1907.
