James Sarsfield Mitchel (born Mitchell) was an amazing athlete from Ireland. He was born on January 30, 1864, and passed away on July 3, 1921. James became famous as a field athlete in America. He even competed in the Olympic Games in 1904. He was part of a special group of Irish-American athletes called the "Irish Whales." These athletes were known for their strength in throwing events.
A Strong Start in Ireland
James Mitchel was born in a place called Emly, in County Tipperary, Ireland. When he was young, he competed in sports events organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). This group helps promote traditional Irish sports.
In 1888, James joined the GAA's "American Invasion Tour." This was a trip where Irish athletes came to America to compete. During this tour, James won a gold medal and two silver medals at the national championships. These championships were held by the National Association of Amateur Athletes of America.
After the tour, James decided to stay in New York City. Many other athletes from the GAA team also chose to stay in America.
Olympic Dreams Come True

James Mitchel represented the New York Athletic Club at the 1904 Olympic Games. These games took place in St Louis, Missouri.
He competed in three different throwing events:
- In the 56 pound weight throw, he won a bronze medal. This was a great achievement!
- In the hammer throw competition, he finished in fifth place.
- In the discus throw event, he finished in sixth place.
James Mitchel was a very strong and talented athlete. He showed great skill in many different throwing sports.
