What Makes the James Morrow House Special?
The James Morrow House has one and a half stories. It also has a basement that is partly above the ground. The front of the house looks the same on both sides, which is called symmetrical. There are two sections with windows on each side of a porch. This porch has a flat roof.
Unique Design Features
The outside walls of the house are covered in a material called stucco. They have green trim, which is like decorative borders. The house also has large sash windows. These are windows that slide up and down to open.
The roof is covered with asphalt shingles. It is a gambrel roof, which means it has two different slopes on each side. This gives it a barn-like shape. The roof also has decorative parts called cornices with brackets. You can see three gable dormer windows on each side of the roof. These are windows that stick out from the sloped roof. The house is built from stone and is very heavy, weighing almost 500 tons!
A House on the Move
The Morrow House used to be part of a large farm. It stood on about 24 acres of land. This land was used for farming.
Why the House Moved
For several years, the house was empty. Then, in 2008, something amazing happened. The house was carefully cut from its foundation. It was then moved about 300 feet (91 meters) to the west. This move was done to make space for new buildings and developments. The people who owned the house wanted to fix it up. They planned to turn it into office spaces. However, as of 2012, the house was still empty.
