James O'Neill (born May 4, 1810 – died March 28, 1882) was an important early settler in Wisconsin. He was a businessman who owned a sawmill and also served as a judge (a "jurist") and a politician. He helped build and shape the community of Neillsville, Wisconsin.

Who Was James O'Neill?

James O'Neill was born in Lisbon, New York. From a young age, he was involved in the lumber business. He worked with wood in Canada and New York. He also had adventures working on riverboats that traveled along the mighty Mississippi River.

Building a Community: Neillsville

Around 1845, James O'Neill arrived in the area that would become Neillsville, Wisconsin. He was looking for the perfect spot to build a sawmill. He found it along the Black River. His sawmill helped the area grow.

The town that grew around his mill was first called O’Neill’s Mill. Later, it was officially named Neillsville in his honor. A creek that flows through the city, O'Neill Creek, was also named after him. This creek flows into the Black River. In 1854, Neillsville was chosen as the main town, or "county seat," for Clark County.

Serving the Public

James O'Neill was not just a businessman; he was also a public servant. He helped manage Clark County's money as its treasurer from 1861 to 1865. He also served on the Clark County Board of Supervisors, even becoming its chairman.

He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly twice, serving in 1849 and again in 1868. This means he helped make laws for the state of Wisconsin.

Legacy and Later Life

James O'Neill continued to run his lumber business and a hotel in Neillsville for many years. He played a big part in the early development of the town.

His nephew, also named James O'Neill, followed in his footsteps. He became a judge and also served in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

James O'Neill passed away on March 28, 1882. He is buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery, leaving behind a lasting impact on the town he helped create.
