James Patrick Hogan (born June 27, 1941 – died July 12, 2010) was a British author. He was famous for writing exciting science fiction stories. His most well-known books are the Giants series. He wrote five books in this series between 1977 and 2005.

James Hogan was born in London, England. He grew up in the Portobello Road area of London.

Early Life and Studies

When he was sixteen, James left school. He worked different jobs for a while. Later, he received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study engineering for five years. He learned about electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering. He studied at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough.

His Career as an Engineer

James Hogan worked as an engineer for several companies. In the 1960s, he started working in sales. He traveled around Europe as a sales engineer for a company called Honeywell.

In the 1970s, he joined Digital Equipment Corporation. This company worked with computers. In 1977, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. There, he managed a training program for sales.

Becoming a Writer

In 1977, James Hogan published his first novel. It was called Inherit The Stars. He actually wrote it to win a bet at his office!

In 1979, he left his job at Digital Equipment Corporation. He decided to become a full-time writer. He moved to Orlando, Florida, for a year. Later, he moved to Sonora, California.

Later Years and Ideas

In his later life, James Hogan had some different ideas. He sometimes questioned widely accepted scientific ideas. For example, he supported some of Immanuel Velikovsky's ideas about catastrophism. This theory suggests that Earth's history was shaped by sudden, big events. He believed that some scientists were not open to new ideas.

James Hogan passed away on July 12, 2010. He was 69 years old. He died at his home in Ireland.
