Who Was James Peachey?
James Peachey was a member of a noble family. He was the younger son of Sir John Peachey, 2nd Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. In 1765, James took over the title of the 4th Baronet after his older brother passed away.
His Political Journey
James Peachey became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1755. He represented the area of Seaford. He held this position in the British Parliament until 1768. Being an MP meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.
Working for the King
James Peachey also had important jobs working directly for the King. In 1760, he became a Groom of the Bedchamber for King George III. This was a close and trusted role in the King's personal household. He held this job for many years, until 1791.
After that, he was given an even higher position. He became the Master of the Robes. This meant he was in charge of the King's clothes and royal ceremonies. He kept this important role until he died.
Becoming a Baron
In 1794, James Peachey received a very high honor. He was made a "peer," which means he became a Lord. He was given the title Baron Selsey, named after the town of Selsey in Sussex. This meant he could sit in the House of Lords, another part of the British Parliament.
Family and Later Life
Lord Selsey lived a long life, passing away in 1808 at the age of 84. He had married Lady Georgiana Caroline Scott in 1747. After his death, his son, John, inherited his titles. Lady Selsey passed away in Berkeley Square, London, in October 1809, at 82 years old.
