James Philipps (born 1594, died 1674) was an important Welsh leader. He was a member of the English Parliament from 1653 to 1662. During the English Civil War, he strongly supported the Parliament's side, known as the Roundheads.

James Philipps' Life Story

James Philipps was the oldest son of George Philipps. His family was well-known in Cardiganshire, Wales. His father had been a "High Sheriff" in 1606, which was like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.

James started studying at Jesus College, Oxford in 1610. During the English Civil War, he worked to manage property that the Parliament had taken. He was also a high-ranking officer, a colonel, in the Parliament's army. In 1649, he became the High Sheriff of Cardiganshire himself.

Working in Parliament

In 1653, James Philipps was chosen to represent Wales in a special Parliament called the Barebones Parliament. This was a time when England was trying new ways to govern after the Civil War.

He was then elected as a Member of Parliament for Cardiganshire in 1654. This was for the First Protectorate Parliament. In 1656, he was elected to represent both Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire. He decided to represent Pembrokeshire in the Second Protectorate Parliament. He was elected again for Cardiganshire in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament.

In 1660, James Philipps was elected to Parliament again, this time for Cardigan. This Parliament was called the Convention Parliament. He was re-elected for Cardigan in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. However, he lost his seat in 1662 after a complaint was made.

His Family Life

James Philipps was married three times. His first wife was Frances Phillips. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Phillips.

In 1647, he married his second wife, Katherine Fowler. Katherine was a very talented poet and was famous for her writing. She passed away in June 1664.

After Katherine's death, James married Anne Rudd. She was the daughter of Sir Richard Rudd.
