Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Praed (born around 1655, died 1706) was an English politician. He served as a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, in 1681 and again from 1689 to 1705.

Early Life and Education

James Praed was the son of James Praed from Trevethoe, a place in Cornwall, England. His mother was Horor Gifford. When he was about 15 years old, in 1671, James Praed began studying at Exeter College, Oxford, which is a famous university. A few years later, in 1674, he joined Middle Temple, a place where people studied to become lawyers. He also held a military role as a colonel in the local militia.

A Career in Politics

James Praed became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of St Ives in 1681. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the House of Commons, where laws are discussed and made. He was chosen again as an MP for St Ives in 1689 and continued in this role until 1705.

During his time in parliament, James Praed was sometimes away for long periods. He also held other important jobs. From 1693 until he died in 1706, he was the recorder of Penzance. A recorder was a legal officer, like a judge, in a town. In 1703, he also became a stannator for Penwith and Kerrier. A stannator was an official who looked after the tin mining industry in Cornwall.

In the election of 1705, James Praed was not re-elected as an MP.

Family Life

Not long before he passed away, James Praed married Lucy Basset. She was the daughter of John Basset from Tehidy, a place in Cornwall. When James Praed died in 1706, he left all his personal belongings to his wife. His land and properties were passed on to his brother, John Praed.
