His Role in the Nation of Islam

At the time he passed away, Shabazz was the head of Mosque No. 25. This mosque served the Muslim community in Newark and Jersey City.

The Events of 1973

On September 4, 1973, James Shabazz was shot several times. This happened while he was opening the door of his car at his home in Newark. Two people ran away after the shooting. Police reports suggested there might have been disagreements within the Black Muslim group.

His Funeral

More than 3,000 people attended Shabazz's funeral. It was held at Mosque No. 25, showing how many people respected him.

Other Incidents Around That Time

James McGregor's death was one of three serious events involving Black Muslims that year. The Hanafi Murder and the death of Major Coxson were the other two. Police believed these events were connected to problems within the group.

After Shabazz's death, an off-duty police officer was taken from the street near Shabazz's home. He was questioned about Shabazz and then released. The people involved were later arrested.

The next day, another man was taken and questioned about the death for 24 hours before being released.

News reports from the Chicago Tribune mentioned that the Nation of Islam had faced internal disagreements. Some of these disagreements were about leadership.

There was also a serious fight in a prison in October 1975. This fight involved members of a group called the New World of Islam.

What Happened Next

After these events, 14 people were accused of being involved in a plan. This plan was said to be about taking control of Newark's Mosque No. 25.
