James Sandilands, 1st Lord Abercrombie, was a Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1600s. He was the son of Sir James Sandilands and Agnes Carnegie. His mother's father was David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk, an important figure at the time.

Early Life and Family

James Sandilands was born sometime before 1627. He married Jean Lichtoun after 1643. They had two children together:

  • James Sandilands, 2nd Lord Abercrombie (born in 1645, died in 1681)
  • Anna Sandilands

Becoming a Lord

After his father passed away in 1644, James Sandilands faced financial challenges. Despite this, he was given the title of Lord Abercrombie on December 12, 1647. This made him a member of the Scottish Parliament.

Financial Challenges and Property Sale

By 1649, Lord Abercrombie had many debts. He had to sell his properties to pay them off. His castle, Newark (also known as St Monans), and other lands in Fife were sold. They were bought by David Leslie, a famous general for the Covenanters. The Covenanters were a Scottish religious and political movement.

Life Abroad and Later Marriage

From 1650 to 1658, James Sandilands lived outside Scotland. He spent these years on the European continent. His first marriage ended in 1663. Later that year, he married Christian Fletcher. She is known for helping to hide the Scottish royal treasures. These treasures, called the Scottish regalia, were hidden before Dunnottar Castle was captured. Lord Abercrombie passed away after February 1667.
