Becoming a Governor

In late 1800, James Stevenson was given a special job. He was made the temporary governor of Mysore. A governor is like a leader of a region. This shows that he was trusted with important responsibilities.

Role in the Second Anglo-Maratha War

Stevenson played a big part in the Second Anglo-Maratha War. This was a major conflict between the British and the Maratha people in India. He worked closely with Major General Arthur Wellesley. Wellesley later became very famous as the Duke of Wellington. Stevenson was Wellesley's senior helper. He led successful attacks on strong forts. These forts included Jalna, Burhanpur, and Asirgarh.

Promotion and Final Years

In January 1805, James Stevenson received a big promotion. He was made a major general. This was a very high rank in the army. Sadly, he died later that same year. He passed away while on a ship returning to England.
