James Stuart (born around 1681 – died 3 April 1743) was a Scottish soldier and politician. He served in the British Army and was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the British House of Commons from 1734 to 1741.

Early Life and Family

James Stuart was the oldest son of Alexander Stuart, who owned land in Torrance, East Dunbartonshire. His mother was Isabel Nisbet. James also had a younger brother named Patrick Stuart, who also became a Member of Parliament.

James Stuart went to the University of Glasgow for his education.

Military Career

Stuart joined the army in 1704 as an ensign, which was a junior officer rank. He served in the 1st Foot regiment. He was promoted several times, becoming a captain lieutenant and then a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Foot Guards by 1724. A year later, in 1725, he became a captain.

He fought in important conflicts, including the War of the Spanish Succession. This was a major European war that lasted from 1701 to 1714. Stuart also took part in the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715. During this battle, he worked as an aide-de-camp, which means he was a personal assistant to a high-ranking officer, the 2nd Duke of Argyll.

After King George II became king, James Stuart was given a special job at the royal court. He became a Gentleman Usher, a role where he helped the King with various duties. He held this position until he died.

Political Life

In 1734, James Stuart was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Ayr Burghs. He was supported by the Duke of Argyll, which helped him win the election.

However, there are no records showing that James Stuart voted on any laws or issues in Parliament. He did not run for election again in 1741.

Later Life

James Stuart inherited his father's estates in 1733. He never married and passed away on 3 April 1743.
