Early Life and Family

James Stuart Erskine was born on September 4, 1821. He was the youngest son of David Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine. His father was a Member of Parliament (MP) and a diplomat. His mother was Frances Cadwalader.

James had many brothers and sisters. Some of his brothers, like Thomas and John, also became diplomats. His maternal grandfather was John Cadwalader, an American general during the American Revolutionary War.

Career and Title

James Stuart Erskine moved to Bavaria, a region in Germany. There, he started a new branch of the Erskine family.

On January 18, 1872, he was given the title of Freiherr in the Kingdom of Bavaria. This meant he became part of the nobility, similar to being a baron. King Ludwig II of Bavaria granted him this special honor.

Personal Life

On February 27, 1849, James Stuart Erskine married Wilhelmina Gräfin von Törring Minucci. She was the daughter of Anton Josef Clemens Graf von Törring Minucci.

Together, James and Wilhelmina had two children:

  • Hermine Maria von Erskine, who married Professor Hermann von Sicherer in 1884.
  • Hermann David Montagu, Freiherr von Erskine (1854–1934). He became a Lieutenant in the Bavarian Army.

James Stuart, Freiherr von Erskine, passed away on June 4, 1904.
